Enhancing efficiency amidst complexity

Construction projects are challenging at the best of times, and having to work within urban areas adds an additional layer of complexity. The good news? Within this complexity, an opportunity has been created to not just eke out small improvements but adopt a transformational new paradigm. Join Mooven for our 'Unleash project efficiency' webinar on Nov 8 to find out how you can drive efficiency gains, accelerate delivery, and reduce complaints. #onlineevent #infrastructure

It's a bitter twist that while completing the vital infrastructure work that keeps our cities flowing and thriving, we also create gridlock and frustration.  As Ben Moore aptly said "It's a cruel irony that two of the most frustrating things to deal with as a driver are bad roads and road works" in an article detailing Mooven's journey to keep our cities flowing

Construction projects are challenging at the best of times, and having to work within urban areas adds an additional layer of complexity. When change happens everything gets harder - and as our cities get even more congested, complex and unpredictable the pressure mounts.

The good news? Within this complexity, an opportunity has been created to not just eke out small improvements but adopt a transformational new paradigm.

Progress in practice

Adopting a new paradigm often starts with smaller efficiencies. Consider a typical contractor scenario:

"How will we deliver this project within the available time slots and without impacting traffic flow?”

Working around lane access rules is the long-established status quo but what if there was an alternative:

  • Evidence-based reality: Analysis of congestion profiles, traffic counts, local business hours and public transit from Mooven reveals that there were only morning peaks, allowing for an extended working window in the afternoon.

  • Action: Using an evidence base that is specific to the particular project location and current conditions, permission was granted to extend works through the late afternoon instead of stopping at 3pm.

  • Result: The project is successfully completed in just six days instead of the original 15 days, significantly reducing the impact on the local community, and reducing the cost of delivery without a negative impact to motorists or local residents.

And now consider the public agency consideration:

“We can’t cause unacceptable traffic delays”

Avoiding delays and impacts to motorists is central to public agencies.  While a more nuanced and refined view of project delivery often appears to be at odds with these goals, Mooven has demonstrated over the past five years that this isn’t the case.  The changes that are possible normally don’t cause additional disruption on the day, whilst simulationally and materially reducing the length of work and total impact.

Are such short-term wins beneficial?

We perceive these efficiencies as integral components of the 'long game', a broader network of continuous improvement for maintenance and capital works delivery.

At Mooven we see our customers refine projects further using real data and evidence-based insights, rather than anecdotal ones - bringing learnings into their wider ways of working and accelerating efficiency gains.  Mitchell Hugo, Senior Project Engineer at National Civil and Building Construction company Georgiou Group, is one of those customers.

Mitchell remarked, “We’re now proving that it’s possible for the industry to lower the impact on road users while ensuring we maintain our deadlines.  With concise traffic data at our fingertips, if there is an accident near our worksite that affects the road network, we can provide a better picture of when and where we need to operate and adjust schedules when necessary, ensuring we don’t set ourselves back or cause further impact on the network.”

Road closures were not a simple task on this busy and dynamic Pacific Motorway, but with Mooven’s infrastructure delivery platform, Georgiou navigated complex environmental constraints by adjusting on-site resources in real-time. Read more in our case study here

Paving the way to progress

We have been working with General Contractors, Departments of Transport and Municipalities to deliver infrastructure faster, within more affordable budgets and with fewer complaints.  Our objective has been to empower decision-makers with the right data and contextual awareness.

The outcome?  These teams have managed to expedite the completion of transport and utility infrastructure projects while minimizing disruptions to local communities.

With the right data and contextual awareness in their hands, operational teams can unlock savings of 20% or more - a transformational outcome for time, cost, safety and trust.

Mooven is running a series of Webinars over the next few months to unpack knowledge and practical advice on how to make a demonstrated impact on efficiency, safety and complaints using Mooven's Infrastructure delivery platform.

If you're managing the delivery of capital improvements for roading, public transit or utilities, specifically where you need to work around traffic and community needs, then sign up for a short webinar. Our California team members will share how you can plan with confidence, and find and implement efficiency gains like longer working windows and proactively improve experiences for road users..
